Does it look interesting to you? Why? Do you prefer fantasy movies that have some realism, or do you prefer those that are completely unrealistic? Write 3-5 sentences. 
  4. Watch a clip from The Wizard of Oz with EdPuzzle questions.
  5. Review characteristics of five movie genres.
  6. Five students will answer 'Hot Seat' questions.

Action Adventure

Characteristics of the Action Adventure genre:
  • A hero (or sometimes a heroine)
  • The odds are against the hero
  • Excitement
  • Suspense

  • The story is often unbelievable

Characteristics of the Romance movie genre:
  • Love story
  • Lovers overcome obstacles
  • Sometimes, a couple is mismatched at first, but falls in love in the end
  • Sometimes, lovers are doomed by circumstances, such as being members of families who hate each other
  • Sometimes there is a love triangle
  • Lovers are usually the opposite sex, but recently they are sometimes the same sex (Brokeback Mountain - 2005)
  • Romance sub-genres: romantic comedy, romantic adventure, romantic drama

Fantasy

High Fantasy (also known as Epic Fantasy)
  • The setting is an imaginary world
  • The rules of that world are different than ours
  • A struggle against evil or supernatural forces
  • Some or all characters have special powers
  • Often features wizards, fairies, elves, dwarves, dragons and demons
  • The story is often a quest
Examples: The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit

Who wrote the fantasy novels, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit?  J.R.R. Tolkien

Contemporary Fantasy (also known as Modern Fantasy)
  • Set in the real world with a connection to an imaginary world
  • Characters travel between the worlds
  • Often there is a portal between the worlds
Examples; The Harry Potter series, Twilight, The Chronicles of Narnia, Peter Pan, Pirates of the Caribbean, Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins
